Statistical analysis
To determine whether the proportion of immunohistochemistry categories differed between the biopsies of the patients with SCFE and the controls, a Chi-Square test of goodness-of fit was performed. To ensure robust analyses, the likelihood ratio test statistic was used with expected values in the cell of the cross tables of less than 5. As several tests were being performed within the same sample, we treated p ≤ 0.01 as being statistically significant.
Results
Twenty biopsies with SCFE in 18 patients and 11 control biopsies in 9 patients were taken in two university hospitals. In the children with SCFE, 12 boys (one bilateral affected) and 6 girls (one bilateral) had a mean age of 13.5 (10-15) and 11.6 (11- 13) respectively at the time of surgery. Hip slips, measured from the Lauenstein radiological view, were classified as 10 mild (angle < 30 degrees), 4 moderate (30 to 50 degrees) and 6 severe (> 50 degrees).
